School Offer for Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
At Barlborough Primary School, our approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. All schools are supported to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with a Special Educational Need(s) and/or disabilities being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible, taking into account the view of children and their families.
Under the new “Children and Families Act 2014” The Local Authority is required is require by law to publish its “Local Offer”. This simply aims to put as much information about available services into one place to make it clear and accessible to all children and their families. How does the school know my child needs extra help?
At Barlborough Primary School, we embrace the fact that every child is different, and, therefore, the educational needs of every child is different; this is certainly the case for children with Special Educational Needs. Special Educational Needs are very varied e.g. learning difficulties, speech and language difficulties and emotional and behavioural difficulties. We know if your child needs extra help/support by recognising that they experience significantly greater difficulty accessing education and learning compared to the majority of children the same age. Where this is the case, we would plan additional support your child may need to help them access the curriculum and achieve their full potential. We use different interventions and approaches to address specific areas of need and would look carefully at your child’s individual needs when deciding how best to support them. Every child’s progress and attainment is tracked in detail so that staff can quickly identify the children who are experiencing difficulties in any area. Regular progress meetings with the head teacher are undertaken to discuss the progress of every child in school.
What should I do if I think my child has SEND?
If you think your child has SEND, the first person you should contact is your child’s class teacher. They will monitor the progress of your child and may identify, plan and deliver any additional help your child may need (this could be targeted work in class with a teaching assistant or additional support outside the classroom). Further advice may also be available from the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCO) or the head teacher.
Who can parents contact for further information?
Your child’s class teacher and the SENDCo are always available to discuss your child’s needs and progress.
Derbyshire Information, Advice and Support Service (DIASS) is the new name for the Parent Partnership Service. We provide independent information, advice and support to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as their parents and carers. This includes Autism, Aspergers, ADHD, Dyslexia or any other special educational need.
We also support children, young people and parents affected by exclusion from school.

What training have staff supporting pupils with SEND had or receiving?
The SENDCo’s job is to support the class teacher in planning for and supporting children with SEND. The school provides training, where necessary, to enable all staff to improve the teaching and learning of children, including those with SEND. Individual teachers and support staff attend training courses run by outside agencies that are relevant to the needs of specific children in their class. The school works closely with a wide range of other professionals to ensure every child/family has access to the resources/help they require.
