Perfect Panthers Newsletter – Spring Term 2 2020
Welcome back!
I hope everyone has had a great half term and the children feel rested ready for another hard-working half term at school! This half term our topic will be Going Underground. It will have a history focus and we will be learning all about coal mining, linked to our trip in week 2 to the National Coal Mining Museum. The children will learn about where the local pits were, how mining changed over the years and also about the disaster at Creswell.
In English we will be writing diary entries from the perspective of miners and also from the points of view of a miner’s wife. This will incorporate writing in first person, past tense and including personal feelings and thoughts of the writer.
Our maths lessons will focus on fractions and multiplication. As always please keep on regularly practicing your times tables. They really do make a difference to all maths work that is done in class.
In RE, we will be looking at what we can learn from different religions about deciding what is right or wrong. Within this we will be learning about the similarities and differences between the values followed by Christians and Muslims.
PE kit
Our PE days are Thursdays and Wednesdays. Swimming will continue to be on Wednesdays. Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school ready for Thursday’s lesson, and a swimming kit for Wednesday consisting of a suitable towel, swimming costume and a swimming cap if required.
Other things that we’ll be focusing on this half term:
Reading:
- I can discuss understanding of the texts that are being read
- I can use intonation, tone and volume when reading aloud
- I can identify and discuss conventions e.g. numbers three and seven in fairy tales.
- I can identify and discuss themes e.g. good over evil, wise and foolish, etc.
Science:
- I can identify that animals, including humans, need the right types of nutrition and that they cannot make their own food; they get their nutrition from what they eat.
- I can identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.
- I can describe the functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans.
- I can identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions.
- I can construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey.

Spring 1 2020 Newsletter
Welcome back!
I hope everyone has had a great Christmas break and are enjoying a happy start to their New Year. It’s a new year for me too as I embark upon my Barlborough journey and I am very excited to get started.
This half term our topic will be Wicked Weather. It will have a geography focus and we will be learning all about how rainy and stormy weather can affect people and their homes. We will also be looking at the effects of weather on the landscape through the process of weathering. In addition, the children will be learning about the water cycle and how the chemical state of water alters during the cycle.
In English we will be kicking off by writing diary entries based around the extreme flooding that we saw in Yorkshire a few months ago. We will follow on from this by writing some poetry linked to the bushfires that are currently burning in Australia.
Our maths lessons will focus on length and perimeter, and fractions. As always please keep on regularly practicing your times tables. They really do make a difference to all maths work that is done in class.
In RE we will be continuing to learn about the importance of prayer within different religions.
PE kit
Our PE days are Thursdays and Wednesdays. Swimming will continue to be on Wednesdays. Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school ready for Thursday’s lesson, and a swimming kit for Wednesday consisting of a suitable towel, swimming costume and a swimming cap if required.

- I can recognise some common conductors and insulator.

Autumn 2 2019 Newsletter
Perfect Panthers Newsletter – Autumn Term 2 2019
After a short break we are back. I hope you have all had a nice rest and the children are refreshed and ready for an exciting new topic. It may be grey and rainy here but in Florida the sun always shines!
This half term our topic will be Fantastic Florida. We will learn all about maps at different scales and types of maps. We will look at the location of Florida and how this affects climate and weather as well as species of plants and animals that live there. We will look at why it is such a popular holiday destination and design a poster to encourage holiday makers to explore outside the theme parks.
In English we will be kicking off by writing a narratives based around the Egyptian topic that the children loved. We will follow on from this by writing persuasive texts based on our Florida topic.
Our maths lessons will focus on multiplication and division and properties of shape. As always please keep on regularly practicing your times tables. They really do make a difference to all maths work that is done in class.
In RE we are learning about prayers from different religions and what significance the words and actions have.
PE kit
Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Swimming will continue to be on Wednesdays and our last swimming lesson will be on the 4h December. Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school on Monday and a swimming kit for Wednesday consisting of a suitable towel, swimming costume and a swimming cap and goggles if required.

Perfect Panthers Newsletter – Autumn Term 1 2019
Welcome back after the summer holidays. I hope you have all had a lovely summer break and all the children are refreshed and ready for the new challenges that lie ahead in year 3.
This half term our topic will be Awesome Egyptians. We will learn all about life in Egypt, including the importance of Pharaohs and mummies. We will be looking at types of evidence and how we know things about the past, as well as researching facts about Ancient Egypt. We will be sharing what we have learnt in our topic in our special museum with parents later in the term. In English we will be writing a newspaper report based on Howard Carter’s discovery of King Tutankhamun and writing a time slip story linked to this discovery. Our Maths lessons will focus on place value, statistics and shape. As always please keep on regularly practicing your times tables. They really do make a difference to all Maths work that is done in class. In RE we are learning about special places with a focus on a Hindu Gurdwara and hopefully a visit to a Gurdwara in Derby (TBC).
PE kit
Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Please make sure your child has a PE in school on Mondays. Starting from Wednesday 25th September, the children will be swimming. Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school on Monday and a swimming kit for Wednesday consisting of a suitable towel, swimming costume and a swimming cap and goggles if required.
