British Values

Promoting the fundamental British values

Barlborough Primary School is committed to promoting fundamental British values. These are taught throughout the curriculum and also through the day to day school experience, including assemblies. Below is an explanation of how we interpret specific values and how they are embedded into our pupils’ educational experience. We want all our children to be prepared for a happy and successful life in modern Britain.

Democracy - This includes making sure our pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Through our School Council and any questionnaires/pupil conferencing we ensure our pupils have the opportunity to make their voices heard, including opinions, concerns and ways in which the school can be further improved.

The Rule of Law - In our school we emphasise the importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country. Each class has set its own rules that are clearly displayed and understood by all. Through PSHE and RE pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Barlborough Primary School has a very clear behaviour policy. The children understand the school rules and the sanctions that are applied when these rules are broken. The behaviour system is applied consistently throughout the school and the children recognise the system as fair and just.

Individual Liberty - Within school pupils need to be actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.  Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely. Lessons in PSHE and e-safety are key areas for promoting individual liberty, but this is also emphasised throughout the curriculum. Our Forest Schools work is key in encouraging children to take risks but in a safe and supportive environment. We celebrate achievements in school with certificates, team points, class cups etc.
All of the children have access to the learning mentor, meaning they can access support in a confidential and supportive way.

Mutual Respect – Mutual respect is at the heart of everything we do in school. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community are encouraged to treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs - Religious Education and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others. Our children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths and the children are beginning to recognise and respect Britain as a diverse and multi-cultural society.
