Loyal Lions (Year 6)

At the start of every academic year, each class meets their new teacher and as a team, they decide on what their class name is going to be for that year. We feel that giving the children collective ownership over their class name helps to foster a strong sense of belonging and pride in their team. This year, our Year 6 class are the...

In Autumn 1, Year 6 begin the year by diving into Holes as their class novel, using it as inspiration for rich reading discussions and creative writing such as setting descriptions and letters home from Camp Green Lake. In maths, they focus on core number skills—place value, the four operations, and geometry—while in science they explore classification within living things. Their history learning takes them back to the Saxons, including Alfred the Great and the changes brought by Saxon invasions. PE centres on cognitive skills, and computing introduces them to computational thinking. Families are invited in to view the children’s bridge structures in Design and Technology, where pupils study bridge types and the work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

During Autumn 2, reading shifts to Beowulf and Viking sagas, and writing continues through these themes. Maths moves into fractions and geometry, and science introduces evolution and inheritance. In PSHE, children learn about drugs education, and in geography they explore how population changes over time. Religious Education focuses on why Christianity does not always look the same. Computing takes an exciting turn with an introduction to AI development, and PE develops creativity. A festive highlight is the term’s carol service.

In Spring 1, the class novel is Wonder, encouraging thoughtful reading and discussion about empathy and difference. Maths turns to decimals, ratio and measures, and science continues with properties of materials. PSHE covers personal changes, and history uses census data to uncover insights about the local area. Computing sees the children working as publishers, while PE focuses on social skills. Samba drumming adds energy to their music lessons.

Moving into Spring 2, children study The Highwayman in reading and explore narrative writing linked to the poem. Maths progresses to percentages and algebra, and science continues with properties of materials. Geography asks where our energy comes from, while PSHE covers themes around growing up. In RE, they complete a catch‑up unit, and in computing they learn about staying connected online. PE leans into physical skills, and the highlight of the term is the residential trip to Whitby.

When Summer 1 arrives, reading includes The Boy in the Dress and Fantastic Women Who Changed the World, and writing includes working on a chapter linked to The Boy in the Dress. Maths focuses on statistics, and science explores human development from birth to old age. In PSHE, children learn about money matters. Geography focuses on fieldwork skills, asking pupils to carry out their own independent enquiry. Art includes clay sculpture inspired by artists such as Barbara Hepworth. In DT, they learn culinary skills by cooking spring rolls and understanding how ingredients are sourced. PE promotes health and fitness, and steel pans bring a fresh musical dimension.

Finally, in Summer 2, pupils prepare for their end‑of‑year celebrations. Reading and writing revisit key skills, culminating in biographies of significant figures and a study of Macbeth. Maths focuses on applying reasoning and problem‑solving skills. Science ends with a unit on electricity, and PSHE explores how to stay safe. Geography concludes with more fieldwork, and computing invites pupils to become toy makers. PE concentrates on personal skills, while art helps pupils refine their painting techniques. The year finishes on a high with the much‑anticipated Year 6 Leavers’ Play and celebration.
