Positive Parrots (Year 5)

Spring 1 Newsletter

Welcome back!

We hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break and are ready for another jam-packed term!

This new term brings with it a new and exciting topic for the children: Blue Planet. We will start by naming and labelling the continents and oceans (learn through song) and look at how much of the world’s surface is covered by water. We will learn about how ocean currents affect the UK’s climate and take a dive into the Mariana Trench (the deepest place on earth) where we will study its physical features.  To end this unit, we will take a look at environmental issues which threaten our oceans in terms of global warming and plastic pollution.  The children will all be provided with a knowledge organiser at the beginning of this topic.  This summarises all of the facts that the children should be able to recall at the end of the unit of work.  A copy of this has already been posted on Class Dojo (as part of the holiday homework).

 Reading
Some children in Positive Parrots have achieved their Bronze certificate and reading wrist band already and are on their way to gaining their silver certificate! Thank you so much for all of the parents/carers at home who have supported this.  We would appreciate your continued support with this reading challenge as we move into this half term too.

Autumn 2 Newsletter

Welcome to Autumn 2 and the fun run up to Christmas.  We hope that everybody has had a restful half term holiday and are now ready for another great term in Year 5.

Our topic this term opens with a re-enactment of the battle of Edington between King Alfred the Great and the Danes.  After studying just how ‘great’ King Alfred was, we will move into our much anticipated topic of the Vicious Vikings.  During this unit, we will explore whether the Vikings were really just vicious raiders and take a peek at their home life and settlements, how they learnt a living and their beliefs.

It has been fantastic to already see how many children are working hard with their reading challenge and we have some children who have read consistently to an adult every week since the beginning of Autumn 1 – Bravo! To help us to continue to develop the children’s reading skills, we would like to remind you to try and hear your child read for at least 15 minutes, 3-4 times a week and sign their reading record.  This can be their class book or a book from their Lexiled reading list, which can be found by logging into Reading Pro. As a reward for reading regularly, each child earns points towards their Reading bands and certificates.   You can do it Positive Parrots.

 Targets:
